Tippi Hedren at The Tides

Tippi Hedren made an appearance in Bodega Bay last weekend to raise money for her animal sanctuary. You can read more details here. So I decided I'd go down and meet her, make a donation, get my photo taken and tell you all about it. Well, I've been stalling all week because I've never really written anything negative in my blog and not sure I want to start now. Let's just say she and her publicist might have been having a bad day.

Anyway, they had a large black booth set up in the lobby of The Tides. There was a TV monitor playing The Birds movie, film posters were on display, and various photos from the movie were stacked on the table. The photos were for sale for $25 with a personal autograph from Tippi, or you could have your photo taken with her, with your own camera, for $15. No conversation, no warm fuzzies, and no, we don't take checks. Proceeds benefitted her animal foundation Shambala Preserve where she is den mother to over 70 big cats.

Same here. I went on Sunday around 1pm and waited in line for half an hour while she was on a break. It was her 2nd day. Clearly, she was tired. When it was my turn, I smiled brightly and tried to engage with her about animal conservation. Complete disinterest. I thought I might get an interesting quote or insight from her to share with my elephant blog readers. But like you, I left there uninspired and with a lack of anything positive to say other than I like the 8x10 photo I had her sign.

What a shame. I guess she keeps doing it to raise funds for the animals but her heart doesn't seem to be into it.

I wasn't there. Sounds from all reports that Ms. Hedren could use a refresher course in PR 101. Or courtesy. Anyone whose hand is out to the public asking for money (especially these days) should know better.

Thanks Norm. Surprisingly, it was her publicist who was the most crabby. As a 25-year PR veteran myself, I was disappointed to see a colleague behave like that.

I met her in Sacramento quite a few years ago and she was very friendly. Of course, she was much younger and still had spunk. Maybe she was having a bad day in Bodega Bay

Well, I made it to Tippi's July 5th, 2010 appearance and had her sign 2 photographs and also had my picture taklen with her. She was very nice. She took notice of my Yin Yang tiger tattoo and remarked that she had gotten her first tattoo earlier this year. Had a great breakfast at the Tides Restaurant too.
